Ponds are filled with a diversity of life. Plants and critters alike have adapted to live in this watery world. While exploring Hildene’s pond, students investigate how this is possible. Join us for one session or all four.

Pond dwelling critters are remarkable for their diversity of size, shape and adaptations for finding food, moving and breathing. Students explore the pond critters in Hildene's pond to make observations and to identify how they are adapted to live in a watery world.

Dragonflies Life Cycles & Dragonflies

Grades: K-2 & 3-4 Length: 1 1/2 hours

Many of the creatures we find in the pond are insects. They do not look like the insects that we see flying around, however. This is because they are young or immature insects. Students discover the different types of lifecycles pond insects complete. They will also examine the familiar dragonfly. Students engage in role play and observation to learn more about these amazing creatures who are fearsome predators of the pond as nymphs and awe-inspiring fliers as adults.

Aquatic plants can grow and reproduce while surrounded by water. Students become botanists as they investigate these plants and the special features that allow them to survive in an environment that is hostile to other plants. Students will also discover how these plants can change the aquatic environment around them.

As the nights grow longer and the days become shorter and the pond gets colder, life at the pond seems to disappear. Where do all the pond critters go? While visiting Hildene’s pond, students observe the changes to this environment as winter approaches. They will discover the different techniques pond creatures employ to allow them to survive in a frozen environment.
